From The Administrator and Director of
Cuban Salsa Ireland
These are the only reasons we can come up with as to why people behave the way they do
when they are introduced to Salsa – basically they’re crazy about it! And as crazy as it may
sound, everyone who has gone into salsa dancing has never regretted it. On the contrary,
many have searched out other forms of Latin dancing to learn, including Bachata, Merengue,
Mambo, Samba, Flamenco, Tango, Cumbia, Quebradita, Reggaeton and many others.
Have you ever wondered what “Cuban Salsa” means?
Salsa means 'Sauce', so the dancers should depict a very hot and spicy interaction with each
other! It is a dance of courtship. Although couples can break away and dance individually,
there should be contact between the man and woman for most of the routine. But,
breakaways do happen - normally at the start, or more commonly in the middle of a routine.
As mentioned above, Cuban Salsa is a dance about courtship, which means that a lot of the
movements are representative of the man trying to flirt with the woman, and the woman
playing hard to get.
Cuban Salsa is also known as "Casino Salsa". Casino Salsa is actually not a difficult dance to
master. In fact, if you have the right technique, it is easier to learn than many other forms of
dance. To start with, your basic footwork is a fairly simple walking motion (pausing every
fourth beat).
Cuban Salsa is the most original form of Salsa - other forms include 'Mambo', 'Modern Salsa',
'New York Salsa' or 'Colombian Salsa'. These were later forms, all based on the original
Cuban Salsa. They came from Cubans who immigrated to New York and mixed Salsa with
elements of Rock and Roll.
So why choose Cuban Salsa Ireland?
At our Tuesday class, we teach Cuban Casino Style Salsa, which is used everywhere in
Cuba. There are many different ways to dance the salsa, however, the majority of other
styles are more ballroom defined. We see “casino” as being more sensual, more fluid and
more partner connective. In essence, it’s fun and crazy.
Our aim for people who join our class is to have fun while they learn to dance. We welcome
people of all ages. As there is no need to have a partner, we welcome individuals as well as
groups. It’s a great place to meet people and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the class while
keeping fit and having fun. For those of you that need one for “Dutch courage”, there is a
bar available.
We welcome corporations and large groups and we can guarantee nothing less than a great
time. Our class will help your employees function better as a team, keep fit and generally be
happier. We are able to provide classes for groups of people from 20 to over 300. Most
recently, we did a Salsa workshop for the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire in
2006. For pictures from the event, please click here.
